In English, There is a predatory language associated with taking photos. Where as Europeans often muddle their words and and say "Lets make a photo!" English speakers 'take' one. In addition, we 'shoot' a photo; Suggesting the looking down a lens is akin to looking down a barrel and your subject or model is prey.

I've adopted the incorrect version now; I prefer to make a photo with someone, than to take a photo of them.

Travelling in Thailand, I carried my sisters instant camera, the type people refer to as a Polaroid. It was a really nice change to approach interesting people and offer to make a photo with them, and then to give them the only copy of that photo. The reactions were wonderful and often it opened strangers up to conversation and led to many experiences and relationships I would otherwise have missed out on. This was particularly true in situations where there was no common language.

If the person and their photo were interesting, I would ask for permission to take a digital photo of them holding the instant slide: The results were fantastic!

I realised that peoples hands said as much about their lives as their faces do. Artists with dirty delicate hands, musicians with elegant long fingers, climbers covered in calluses, and manual jobs with heavy strong hands.

In addition, the way that people decorate their bodies was fascinating. We spend a lot of thought and effort projecting our internal image into the outside world by choice of how we present it. It made me realise how much story was behind each ring, bangle, watch, scar, tattoo and adorned nail.
Following this post will be a series titled "Hands and Faces" (I'm aware of how unoriginal that is) With hopefully some beautiful photos and some insight into the beautiful people I met on this trip.
