You smell...

You really smell...

You really smell like the four days it's been since your skin last touched fresh water.  Maybe a change of clothes along the way might have helped that.

Heavy leather, thick denim and stiff kevlar roll uncomfortably over the salt and sand against your skin.  The full strength of the Australian sun beats down on the uniform you wear, in compulsory black and this may have something to do with the fact your sweating more than a little

At least your pungent socks are being aerated by the cool 100km per hour wind that passes through the holes in the front of your old worn boots.

Burnt, dirty, tired, hungry, thirsty and more than a bit smelly.

...but none of that matters...

because it's what you wanted

...

and this moment is perfect:

The sun hits the canopy at about 70m from the ground. Dappled light passes through the green ceiling and stains the panoramic barcode of white tingle tree trunks. A pattern stretches ahead of you, from green on the left, through red, black, white, black, red and green again on the right. the colours keep their order but bend and morph left and right, up and down as the road tucks away beneath your knees at a surprising rate.

Over a crest, long left hander: slide across the bike, tuck the seat into the hollow of the back of your right knee, eyes up, roll on the throttle. small counter steer and lean it over.  There it is; That amazing feeling: turning, balancing, accelerating, but really all in a moment of constance. The only comparable is sitting deep into the tube of a wave on a body board, hard on the rail. The flickering shadows hold you, embrace you. Theres a comfort to this forest.

As strange as it is, this road, this man made scar through this beautiful forest seems so part of it. so smooth, so fast. So do you, this all works so well, your part of this magical equation to.

that was it. that was why i went. An 1000km+ loop, just for those rolling roads under those spectacular giants and the ephemeral feeling of bliss that came with it.

worth it?

absolutely

what else do you need?

I spent a lot of time on the Mediterranean in the last two years. it just didn't feel right. the sea should be alive and move. here the waves break on the rocks, rolling in on the Indian ocean
